In a significant decision, the Loliem-Polem panchayat has decided to levy a garbage tax of Rs 50 a day on trucks stationed and parked in the village.
The decision, which could invite criticism from several inter-state transporters, has been passed at a monthly meeting of the Loliem-Polem panchayat.
Defending the decision, Loliem-Polem Sarpanch Ajit (Ajay) Lolienkar said several state and inter-state trucks are stationed in open spaces near the Dapot petrol station along the NH-66 highway.
“These trucks are stationed not for a few hours, but are sometimes parked for days together.
“There is open defecation in the area, besides generation of trash and garbage in the area. We have, therefore, resolved to levy a fee of Rs 50 per truck per day as garbage tax and a receipt will be issued to them,” informed Lolienkar.
The panchayat also conveyed its decision to representatives of the transporters and a transporter handler at Dapot, asking them to respond within two days.
Asked what would be the panchayat’s reaction if transporters did not agree to the tax, Lolienkar replied: “We will not have any problem. Let them convey their decision and in case they refuse to adhere to the panchayat’s decision, trucks will not be allowed to park by the side of the NH66 highway in the village beyond a
reasonable time.”
